Review #1,748: South Gate Cartel "Chasin' For Fettie"

Reviewed on 8.08.2017 (Review #1,748)

Doin’ anotha review, right chea… This my 5th review for today (wow, I’m really back in action; nice and focused!): South Gate Cartel, outta Lafayette, Chasin’ For Fettie, released in 1998 on Longwind Records & South Gate Records! Start Time: 8:18 PM | End Time: 9:26 PM

Disclaimer: I rate each song from 1.0 – 5.0; each rating iz my own opinion! I only please myself wit my ratings! I don’t care how lyrical you are, as long as it’s jammin’ enough for me to like it! I look for beats, then vocals, and then lyrics. To determine my favorites, I will differ tha 4.0 ratings. If a song gets at least a 4.0 rating from me, I love it already. If at least a 4.6 rating, I pretty much really love it, as it’s considered mindblowin’ when I hear it! Any song can earn up to a maximum of a 5.0 rating. Anything I type before “ >>> “ iz what I’m sayin’ before I listen to tha song; anything after I type “ >>> “ iz what I think of tha song while I’m listening to it. If you sound like anything too mainstream for me, have auto-tune in your vocals, or talk about nothin’ but money and hoes (which I consider ‘typical’ topics), I’m not buyin’ it!

01. Intro
>>> Feelin’ tha vibe; lookin’ forward ta hearin’ this CD… My Rating: N/A

02. “Chasin’ For Fettie”
>>> A regular-paced track, here; feelin’ this production… Kinda gives me that UGK vibe on tha hook, here; good shit… Definitely feelin’ all this ‘candy paint’-type content; let’s get it! Hearin’ tha 1st verse and it’s soundin’ nice ta hear, here… Hearin’ tha 2nd verse and it’s soundin’ a lil’ deeper wit tha voice, here, but soundin’ nice, still… Keepin’ it goin’ wit tha 3rd verse, here, still soundin’ nice and deep… My Rating: 4.2

03. “Take It To Tha Streets”
>>> Decent lil’ southern beat, here; decent lil’ hook, too… Hearin’ tha 1st verse and there’s a lotta consistent rhymes fa tha south, here; good shit! Hearin’ tha 2nd verse and y’all keepin’ it movin’ in a way for tha quality, here; nice! Hearin’ tha 3rd verse and it’s good, too; can’t complain ‘bout nothin’! My Rating: 4.0

04. “Ballin’ Out”
>>> This has a West Coast feel to it, in tha production… Hearin’ tha 1st verse and tha flow kinda sounds talk-y…? Decent at its finest, here… Hearin’ tha hook and it kinda sounds like y’all tryna have a cool time; it’s decent fa me, tho… Keepin’ it movin’ wit tha 2nd verse, here, soundin’ decent; nothin’ too special, here… My Rating: 3.6

05. “Count Tha Amount”
>>> Diggin’ tha dark-soundin’ beat, as it slowly gets dark up here… Hearin’ tha hook and it’s catchy fa a countin’ track… Hearin’ tha 1st verse and this some consistent, street-soundin’ shit, here… Keepin’ it movin’ wit tha 2nd verse, here… Lol, “Movin’ weight like Ronald Reagan;” random, but good… Hearin’ tha dude on tha 2nd ½ of tha 2nd verse and I almost thought it was Max Minelli… My Rating: 4.3

06. No Show (Skit)
>>> Definitely feelin’ y’all shmokin’ on da best “killa,” right chea; good-ass shit! My Rating: N/A

07. “Money II Be Made”
>>> Sounds a lil’ slow and a lil’ upbeat, at tha same time… Hearin’ tha 1st verse and it ain’t bad, here… Hearin’ tha hook and there ain’t anythang catchy about it, fa me… Like, where’s tha title part? Hearin’ tha 2nd verse and I’m likin’ tha deeper voice, here… Also, I like tha “shiiid” part; “shiiid” in tha ‘90s! Lol, he said, “Shiiiid,” again; nice… Hearin’ tha 3rd verse and it’s soundin’ a lil’ consistent wit tha rappin’, here, especially around 3:28 – 3:58; good shit! My Rating: 3.8

08. “Throw Up Yo Side”
>>> Good rhymes in tha 1st verse, here, on this semi-West-soundin’ beat… Hearin’ tha hook and it’s decent, here; nice lil’ female addition, too… Hearin’ tha 2nd verse and it’s not bad, here… Keepin’ it movin’ wit tha 3rd verse, here, soundin’ nice, this time… My Rating: 3.9

½time: So far, pretty good; a 4.0-rated CD… Some vibes are a lil’ drier than others, while tha southern cadillac musik’s there, at least…

09. “Gotta Have Tha Money”
>>> Sounds like a decent track, especially to be about “money,” lol; decent hook… Hearin’ tha 1st verse on this upbeat beat and it’s nice; can’t complain… Keepin’ it movin’ wit tha 2nd verse and it’s still jammin’ nice, here… Keepin’ it movin’ wit tha 3rd verse, here, soundin’ nice, too… My Rating: 3.7

10. “Eye II Eye”
>>> Hearin’ tha 1st verse and it sounds like tha life of a gangsta, here; gotta enjoy it… Gotta luv tha “‘Bauds,” too; good shit… Hearin’ tha hook and it’s decent/good; can’t complain, here… Keepin’ it movin’ wit tha 2nd verse, here, soundin’ like anotha good verse, too… And, tha 3rd verse’s pretty nice fa tha south, here; nice job… My Rating: 3.8

11. Bammer (Skit)
>>> Random lil’ grain-y background, here; sounds nice fa tha outside of ’98… My Rating: N/A

12. “Keep’em Boppin’”
>>> Sounds good wit this upbeat beat, as well as y’all on tha 1st verse, here… Hearin’ tha 2nd verse and it’s soundin’ like a nice lil’ verse, too; gotta luv tha south! And, keepin’ it movin’ wit tha 3rd verse, here, continuin’ to keep it movin’… My Rating: 3.8

13. “Call It Like I See It”
>>> Decent beat; decent-soundin’ 1st verse, here… Hearin’ tha hook and it sounds anthemic, even tho only decent fa me… Hearin’ tha 2nd verse and it ain’t bad, here… Keepin’ it movin’ wit tha 3rd verse, here, soundin’ like a nice lil’ verse, as well; decent, overall… My Rating: 3.9

14. “Die 4 My Change”
>>> A slower vibe, here; not too bad wit tha 1st verse, here… Hearin’ tha hook and it ain’t bad… I think I like tha otha “money” hook betta than this, but this ain’t bad… Keepin’ it movin’ wit tha 2nd verse and it’s not bad, too; let’s keep it goin’… Keepin’ it movin’ wit tha 3rd verse and it’s decent, too; still feelin’ tha southern vibe… My Rating: 3.5

15. “Black Rain”
>>> After a bunch of decent songs, here comes a catchy beat start; sounds dark and interestin’, here… Hearin’ tha 1st verse and it sounds like a nice lil’ southern vibe, too… Hearin’ tha hook and it’s definitely catchy; diggin’ this dark content! That sad, “black rain!” Hearin’ tha 2nd verse and y’all keepin’ it movin’ in a nice way… I like how it stormed fa a second and then, at 2:11, y’all picked up tha 2nd verse; definitely nice! And, a tribute to those that have fallen at tha end… My Rating: 4.4

16. “Stay True”
>>> Just a decent beat, here; nothin’ too special… Hearin’ tha 1st verse and it’s not bad, here… Hearin’ tha hook and it’s on an R&B tip, here; not too crazy ‘bout dis one… Hearin’ tha 2nd verse and it’s soundin’ nice wit tha rappin’ bein’ fast, here… Damn, this one 5:48? Too long fa me, here… Hearin’ tha 3rd verse and it decent; not too big about sad songs like this… My Rating: 2.2

17. Outro
>>> Good shout outs, here, ova a nice beat… My Rating: N/A

Overall: I thought this turned out ta be a good CD, at times… Most of it was just a lil’ above-average fa me but that don’t mean it wack… Nice job, str8 from Lafayette!
